Food Safety

Know what's safe to eat — at home and when eating out.

What the food safety guide does

After a transplant, there are some foods and drinks you'll need to avoid. It can be hard to remember them all, especially in the early days.

Transplant Log includes a food safety guide that lists the things you should avoid. It's always there in the app for quick reference, whether you're at home, shopping, or eating out.

To find it, go to the Profile tab and tap Food Safety.

Please check with your transplant team

The food restrictions listed here are common for liver transplant patients, but every person's situation is different. Always double-check against the guidance your own transplant team has provided. If you're unsure about anything, ask your team — they know your care best.

Two types of restrictions

Lifetime restrictions

These are foods and drinks to avoid permanently after your transplant. They include things like:

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice Seville oranges and pomelo Star fruit Alcohol Raw or undercooked shellfish Unpasteurised dairy St John's Wort Herbal supplements (without medical advice)

This is not the full list — see the app for the complete guide.

Temporary restrictions (first 6 months)

In the first six months after your transplant, you'll also need to avoid some extra foods while your immune system is at its most suppressed. These include things like:

Raw or undercooked eggs and meat Sushi and smoked salmon Cured and deli counter meats Soft cheeses Buffet food Unwashed fruit and veg

If you've entered your transplant date in Settings, the app will automatically show or hide these temporary restrictions based on how long ago your transplant was.

Waiter Mode

Eating out can feel tricky when you need to avoid certain foods. Waiter Mode makes it easy to show restaurant staff what you can't eat.

How to use it

  1. 1 Open the Food Safety section from your Profile
  2. 2 Tap Show to waiter
  3. 3 Your phone will show a clear, full-screen list of foods to avoid — just hand your phone to your waiter or server

The text is large and clear so it's easy for someone to read quickly. It only shows the restrictions that apply to you right now.

A note about the food guide

The food safety information in Transplant Log is based on general guidance for liver transplant recipients. Your transplant team may have specific advice that's different. Always follow the guidance your own team has given you.
